Everyone is in a rush to declare the recession over.  You and I know that it is still tough out here for working families and singles.  Even though things might be loosening a little, we can all still benefit from some smart money tips.

I used to love long trips to the supermarket.  But nowadays, I make my trips short and sweet.  I have a list and I stick to it.  My trips to the supermarket made me realize that it’s getting harder and harder to stretch a dollar that is decreasing in value every day.  With all those bills that we have to pay every month, it is imperative that we learn to save money on bills.

I read once that it’s not how much you earn that ensures a comfortable and happy life; but it’s how much you save that matters.  That is why it is important to save money, especially when it comes to your monthly bills.

Here are few ways to save on monthly bills:

1. Turn off appliances and lights when not in use.

The logic is simple.  Why would you leave something turned on when nobody is going to use it?  That’s definitely a bad habit.

Hence, if you really want to cut back some on your electricity bill, always turn off the lights and your appliances when not in use.  Although the savings are not astronomical, every little bit helps.

2. Use energy-saving lights and appliances.

Nowadays, saving on your electricity bill is not impossible because you can opt for energy-saving lights and appliances.  Energy-saving lights, such as fluorescent lights, consume lower amounts of energy but can still give you a more than suitable amount of illumination.

There are also various lines of energy efficient appliances that can help you save substantially on your energy bill.

3. Always check for leaks.

Water bills can be quite high because of undetected leaks.  Not only does this waste a precious resource, but it can also add hundreds of dollars to your monthly bill.  You can prevent this by ensuring that every pipe is free from any leaks and making sure that you completely close faucets.

4. Become more tech-savvy.

You can reduce your cell or house phone bill substantially by being tech-savvy.  That is, opt for the emails, chatting services, and the free voice and video calling services available via the Internet.  You can eliminate your house phone and reduce your cellular plan by taking advantage of these free communication services.

5. Insulate your home.

Insulating your home is a definite energy-saver.  You will save a great deal of money on your heating costs once you learn how to properly insulate your home.
