Many new graduates or currently unemployed workers will often accept a job without knowing the job descriptions or requirements.  This is very understandable.  Because unemployment is so widespread and many new graduates are fighting for limited job prospects, there is increased competition for a smaller pool of jobs.  Thus, potential employees are reluctant to ask possibly disqualifying questions.  However, you should still be fully armed with all necessary information before you walk into a job interview.  Obtaining an accurate job description is essential when it comes to finding the kind of work or career you want.

Employers are impressed when you have a thorough knowledge of their company and the job requirements.  This kind of initiative may be the difference between landing a job and not getting a return phone call.  Besides making a good impression on a potential employer, there are other compelling reasons to know the official job description.

Know What Is Expected of You

A job description will furnish you with a list of your responsibilities and duties.  This will ensure that you know what jobs you are supposed to do and exactly what your employer expects from you.  Having this knowledge will allow you to do your job more efficiently and prevent unnecessary and redundant work.

Don’t Get Taken Advantage Of

There will be instances when as an employee you will be asked to do specific duties that are not in your job description. In these situations, you do have options.  It is perfectly legal to point out that the task is not in your job description and you are not compelled to do it.

Of course, you can choose to perform these duties.  However, make it clear that what you are doing is not within your job description.  You and your manager may then choose to talk about whether these duties should be included in the job description and the proper remuneration for these new duties.
